Nelsonian Navigator - Issue Four - Autumn 1996

From tbe Editor

Well, Issue four !! For me, this marks the end of my first real year here at the Navigator headquarters.  Thanks to you, the loyal readership, things are going fine and the first year has gone far better than I had expected.  Despite some problems, I am truly proud of the "Nelsonian Navigator" and thanks to Bill, a second year starts with this issue !!

You will quickly realise that this issue is quite different from previous issues.  With Bill currently studio bound, a greater degree of this issue that is before you is all down to me and my computer.  Bill is truly sorry for not being able to set aside time for his editorial his questions and answers etc.... Issue five, around March, will be more back to normal.  Still I hope you all enjoy this issue.

American Nelsonians will be pleased to see a point of contact in your home country.  This was to save postage on both sides, and also to cut the price of items for you to buy.  Over time, I had become aware of problems with people affording the service from America, so this is really to help you.  Without further a-do, I would like to thank Mr Dave Middlebrough for his time is setting up the "Navigator USA".  See membership sheet for all the information, but for European Nelsonians, everything stays the same.

I'm particularly pleased with some of the new merchandise that we have to offer.  We have responded-to requests for sweatshirts, we have now two new styles to offer and both being in full colour.  Also, we now have Baseball caps !! See all the information you need on the merchandise page.

Looking back at some ideas in the postbag, I hope that their is more for you to look at 'in this issue.  Sadly, official photographs of Bill are now rare so we do the best we can with what's on offer.  I am very grateful to Rob at Resurgence for providing me with a lot of visual information needed for this issue, particularly the "Weird Critters" art-work.

I am currently thinking of changing the way in which the Navigator is presented.  I'd like to know your thoughts on how you would view something that's A5 size instead of A4, or perhaps, as has been suggested, a monthly newsletter instead of the more substantial Navigator magazine.  Let me know what you think.

The question of Bill live is still an eager issue for fans so here is the current position.  Recently, I have been forwarding ideas on this topic to the relevant people so I hope to hear something soon.  I am pleased that Bill's management, Opium Arts, have welcomed ideas on this and Rob at Resurgence has again expressed interest with his unmistakable enthusiasm.  Like a lot of things in music, its down to money, and of more importance, Bill's diary. 1997 looks busy for him.

Well, please keep in touch and I hope to welcome you all to a second year of the Navigator.

Best wishes to all

Rich Cahill

+ I have a whole number of Bill's touring story's that I would include as favourites.  Often unbelievable, often outrageously funny.

People have often asked where and at what time did I start to know BilL I had always known of him through my father who has known and come across Bill for 20 years.  He used to repair Bill's TV's or Video's.

Then, after many years, I asked Bill if I could do a piece on him for the local press.  I did, it got published, and from then on things have become as they are today.  To answer another question, No, I do not have a copy of the piece I did on Bill in July 1994.

As for the question on who asked who to run the Navigator, I honestly can't remember whether Bill asked me or I asked to do it.  But work to begin everything started in Feb 1995, the PO Box opened in April 1995, first issue August 1995.  Now, Issue four 11
