Help with Bills back catalogue
Hi I need help to start listeneing to Bills work

I was a BBD fan back in the 70s (Sunburst finnish first album of BBD I bought) and followed him right up until Red noise
I need to know where to start I’m not into the ambient experimental work
(just my personal taste) I love his more guitar oriented with a vocal if possible which albums
should I start with any recommendations would be much appreceiated
thanks
Antman

Hi and welcome antman..........boy, you've got some catching up to do but what a journey!

I'd recommend you get over to Bill's Bandcamp page and start downloading....a LOT of Bill's past CD's are long out of print so unless you want to go the Ebay route and pay silly money, use Bandcamp and support Bill..

I'd go for The Romance of Sustain, Plaything or the latest Bancamp reissue of Wah Wah Galaxy as a start....plenty of guitar sheganigans going on there! ( Just listen to 'For Stuart', if you haven't done so already on ROS ).....There are LOADS of guitar/vocal inspired albums in Bill's vast catalogue, ( I'm sure Bill will be giving you pointers ) and you will not be disappointed matey!

Andy

Great name, Antman . :)

I think you will find that Joy Through Amplification (The Ultra-Fuzzy World of Priapus Stratocaster) will be VERY much to your liking .

Only a tenner [or more if you wish] over at the Bill Nelson Bandcamp :

https://tinyurl.com/ybhmdsxg

That's my recommendation as a great place to start for you and your parameters . :)

And then go to the Sound On Sound page and buy The Dreamshire Chronicles CD :

https://tinyurl.com/yck2etm8

Then point your browser at The Cherry Red Esoteric Bill Nelson page and buy the Getting The Holy Ghost Across CD :

https://tinyurl.com/ybqe46qk

That's where I'd recommend going .

Hi Antman,

When Mick Winsford and I created the Northern Dreamer Guide to Bill's music, one of our goals was to recommend titles similar to each release documented. We gathered fellow forum members (including Andy) to help us craft these lists. (Their names are listed in the Guide credits in the Info section.) I included these Album Suggestions in the Discography pages of the new website. So on each album page you'll find suggestions for similar releases.

cheers, John

Thanks for your recommendations its good to hear
fans views and I know you all have different tastes

one thing I've picked upon is what a great community here on this
forum (and I love the way Bill gets involved with it as well)
I was only 16 when I bought sunburst ( and that was because of Ships on T.O.T.Ps) and was lucky enough to see Bill with both BBD and Red Noise the last time I saw Bill live was at the Mick Ronson tribute concert

Once again thanks for your help and keep them coming

You must obtain a copy of the obscenely low-priced Return To Tomorrow (These Tapes Rewind, Volume 1) available via the SOS Bill Nelson store .

Atom Shop and Blue Moons and Laughing Guitars come to mind. Lots of great guitar work and vocals, really good songwriting.

Oh yeah, and Noise Candy too

Agreed but ... is it still available through official channels at the moment ? I was trying to present stuff that’s available through those .

Atom Shop is another like After The Satellite Sings ... in fact I think of those two as a pair for some reason .

Atom Shop was available at SOS until fairly recently.

And, damn, we plum forgot Fancy Planets is on the Bandcamp .

You’ve got to get Fancy Planets, Antman .
