Does anyone else have an issue with whoever writes the album notes on the website, I cringe every time I read “Nelson” this and “Nelson” that, surely we “know” him well enough to call him Bill?

Hi Mick,

As the author of the notes let me try and explain the approach taken with the notes.

The general approach I personally take when writing about musicians is to use their surname - so I write a lot about Peter Gabriel for example and I refer to him as Gabriel regardless of my personal connection with the artist. I once worked for his organisation as a consultant and while we were on first name terms if doing a piece of reportage (as I did from time to time) it was “Gabriel did this” and so forth. To me that’s how critics generally do things and while I’m a supporter of Bill’s I’m reporting from a critics perspective. These are pieces of reportage if not strictly critical pieces and they are not personal or fan letters where first name terms would certainly apply.

In addition the pieces on the discography were written as if they could stand outside of any official forum and are aimed as much at new fans as old so the use of Bill’s surname seems more appropriate to both myself and John Fisher who worked alongside me on the original
Music guide and what was developed into this discography.

I hope that explains it from the authors point of view.

Mick

Fair play, Mick, I can understand better but it will forever make me cringe! Surely if you’re reading a piece about Bill Nelson’s latest release you’d know who “Bill” is through the piece?!
