When I was a pop-rock songwriter, way, way back in the 1970s, one song I came up with remains a favourite of mine to this day. It's titled 'Maid In Heaven.'
Here's a Facebook comment about it which prompted this post:

"Re. 'Maid in Heaven'. I remember when John Peel was compere at The Reading Festival. He played this MANY times, once proclaiming "A number of us back here think that listening to this is better than getting your end away"

If listening to it is better than sex, what must performing it be like ? 8)
I bet you really have to concentrate during the 'twiddly bits'

Top bloke, that John Peel. He remains greatly missed.

I've often heard it described as two and half minutes of musical perfection. I couldn't agree more :D

There's so much going on it.

One can appreciate and lose one's self in all the details or one can just enjoy how so many emotions are expressed and flow together as a very lively and focussed pop song with a lovely melody.

Many kinds of rewards in two and half minutes, leaving the listener suspended, wanting and hoping for more.

Man ! I can think of so many things to say about listening to Maid in Heaven. Aside from all the feeling that flows through listening to it, I have in past tried to put it in a list of what I have considered the best rock songs of all time...fit it in with rock songs like:
Badge
La Grange
The Story In Your Eyes
.....etc.......

I will be one of the last ones on here focussing on the the initial, short lived part of Bill's career and output also known as Be Bop Deluxe. As much as I enjoyed that part of his career, and as significant as it was to me in that it was Be Bop that got me into Bill's music, I find what he has done in the last ten years or do to be the best and most significant work of his career. However, when I heard the Rocketeer' s version of "Maid in Heaven" it was like I was hearing it for the first time. It was better than any Be Bop version I had ever heard, and it was something I had to play over and over again. A full band, playing it live, is really the only way to do justice to the energy of the song. Pop perfection. It wasn't a favorite of mine during its time, but it may be my favorite Be Bop now. It has truly withstood the test of time. You can't say that about many songs.

Typically, Peel would introduce Maid in Heaven with a simple "This one's for The Pig...". The Pig in question being Peel's wife Sheila whom, I think we can assume, was a fan of the song.
