The news of Stan Lee's passing made even the BBC tv news headlines, which I felt was fitting for a man who launched such a modern mythology into our pop-culture consciousness.

I first encountered Stan Lee's work way back, in the early 1960s whilst still a kid at secondary school. I had the very first issue of Spiderman, and The Fantastic Four. Sadly lost those many years ago, but if I still had them now they could be sold to fund several very expensive new guitars. Their current prices are astronomical!

Growing up in the '50s and '60s was a wonderful time for kids who, like myself, thrilled to the adventures of super heroes and sci-fi characters. From home-grown heroes such as Dan Dare and Marvelman, through to US ones such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, etc, (all DC comics creations,) and then on into the Marvel Comics era, with several diversions into lesser known comic book publications, (though no less fascinating,) the genre was rich with creative ideas that captured our imagination and, to an extent, the spirit of the times.

Stan Lee was an ideas man, a conceptualist. He had the vision and imagination to gather together some of the finest graphic artists to bring the characters he envisioned to life. And Stan's life was a great success story, one which endures today and will endure beyond his passing.

He helped reinvent the medium.

Wish he'd paid his artists a bit better, but you have to admire what he put together at Marvel.

Didn't realise until a few minutes ago that Stan Lee and Alain Resnais, the great French New Wave filmmaker, had written a script.

Criterion made a short documentary, called Marvel Mon Amour, about the film that never got made:
