H. G. Wells wrote The War of the Worlds closer to the American Revolutionary War than to today.

Thanks for bringing up our very own Brexit. Bye, bye Britain.

That is a mind-boggling fact when you think about it.

I don't really think so :) All you have to do is pick some historical date, and then find an event which took place less than halfway between then and now.

For example:
- Man walking on the Moon is closer to WW2 than to today.
- JFK's assassination is closer to WW1 than to today.
- Bill Nelson's birth is closer to the start of the Boer Wars than to today. (Sorry, Bill!)

Back in the mid-1980s, I was visiting my parents in the senior living condo they'd moved to.

Their across-the-hall neighbors needed to have a chair moved, and asked if I could help with it. Sure. Easily taken care of. They were very nice & I visited with them a bit. He was also ex-Air Force. A fighter pilot. About 85 or so at the time.

As I said goodbye while standing in their entryway, I noticed a small framed certificate on the wall. Looking closer, I could see it was his graduation certificate from flight school… signed by Wilbur Wright.
