100 years since the end of WW1.

Difficult to believe.

Here in Kansas City, are remembrances of the war. Especially the end of the war. We have the National World War 1 Monument located here, and it has been "decked out with poppies" in commemoration to the end of the war to end all wars.

If it had only been.

Here is a shot, taken by a friend, of the monument at night, illuminated by poppies.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI

A metal commemoration of the Great War. Pretty cool music. Metal with violins etc. Rocks too.

Was ALL so moving, and it is right that we should never forget. Peter Jackson's film last night on BBC2 (on iplayer now for 6 days) was AMAZING. Deserves loads of awards.

Agreed Carole, that film was one hell of a piece of restoration - everything seemed so real, and truly moving hearing the memories of those that were there.

In a strange foot note of history, the Cherokee Nation declared war on the Kaiser. Were sent overseas and fought valiantly in the fields of France. Came home in triumph to horrific treatment by the US Government, so much so, that legislation was crafted to provide US Citizenship to all indigenous individuals. The legislation passed in 1924. In 1932 several disastrous federal Indian policies ended and the Indian Reorganization Act was passed. I cannot declare that the war on Indians is over yet, but it was a turn around since the wild wild west. Oh, and in WWII, because who does not love a sequel, the Navajo code talkers saved the US military in the Pacific as the Japanese could not talk Indian.

Eisenhower desegregated the military and we sort of followed in the years afterward. So while we can say that nothing good has ever come from military actions at the cost of so many lives, lives here in America have been changed for the better (?) and we have spread baseball to multiple countries.
