One of the many things I've been busy with in recent months is conducting an interview with my earliest guitar hero, the legendary Duane Eddy, a musician who was so important to me in inspiring my love of the guitar. The interview was done at the invitation of, (and for,) the American magazine 'Guitar Player.'

The complete, unedited version of the interview is now officially available on 'Guitar Player' magazine's website. An abbreviated version of the interview will appear in the January issue of the magazine, but, for the full story, please check out the online version which, in my opinion, (and also Guitar Player magazine editor Michael Molenda's opinion,) is one of the most comprehensive and frank interviews Mr Eddy has ever given. I'm thrilled and proud to have had this opportunity to interview a musician who meant so much to me when I was taking my first tentative steps as a guitarist so many years ago! :)

Here's the link for you to enjoy the article:

That part where Duane says that a teacher told him "A gee-tar is a gutter instrument" is pretty rough! Seems like dialogue from an old film.

Also, Lefty Frizzell? Hmmm, interesting surname there! Slightly different spelling.

This is a great read. Just started reading it.

I knew Mike Molenda many years ago.

Fascinating interview, Bill 8) :D

What an exciting privilege to be able to interview one of your top musical heroes. You must have been blown away at some of the compliments he gave you regarding your own playing 8)

How was the interview structured? Was it done in 'real time' or by a series of e-mails?

One other question, which of your albums did you give to Duane to listen to?

Interviewing Duane, (and presenting him with a Mojo magazine Icon award a couple of years ago,) was a wonderful and surreal experience. When I was ten or eleven years old, miming to Duane's 'Because They're Young' single in my bedroom, clutching a 'pretend' guitar I'd made from a sheet of cardboard, bits of plastic and old buttons, I would never have dreamed that, just over 50 years into the future, I'd get to meet him and thank him for his inspiration.
Duane's generous comments about my own playing were completely unexpected and I'm flattered and 'chuffed to bits,' as you might well imagine!

The interview was done via email, between my home here in Yorkshire and Duane's in Nashville. It ran to over 12,000 words but could easily have been longer as we both really enjoyed the interaction. I was conscious not to make it too long and, in fact, the print magazine version has been trimmed to make it fit more easily into the magazine's format...but, thankfully, the online version is 100% intact! :D

Oh, I definitely remember giving Duane a copy of 'Rosewood Volume 1,' and I may have given him a copy of 'Practically Wired' too...but that was back at the Mojo awards and I was in such a 'tiz' that I can't remember exactly what others I gave him!

If I remember correctly, it was Rosewood Volume One and Here Comes Mr Mercury.

Excellent, I don't doubt that Duane would have been blown away by Never A dull Day (For Les Paul) 8)

Well, I suppose the obvious question would be, will there ever be an album made with Mr Eddy?

Oddly, when Duane starts answering the 6th question (By the time I was ten years old...), I thought he had suddenly moved to Southeast Asia.
