Your version of Silent Night on your Christmas videogramme is absolutely stunning. Please release this as a single download. I'd gladly pay for it. It really is probably the very best instrumental version of the carol that I've ever heard. The whole world should hear your version. I could imagine it being played every year on the radio. It really is that good.
maybe make it a double A side and put The Girl On The Fairground Waltzer on too. Now that would be a wonderful 'single'.

Thanks very much, Major, high praise indeed! :)

I agree, major ! On the B side (though it's not a B) should be Frost-0-Matic.

Thank you for the Christmas gift of music.

I note that the dynamic range of these free music files is greater than is the norm for the recent releases on Sonoluxe and DOAO.

DR13 0.00 dB -16.24 dB 3:36 ?-Beat Street
DR10 0.00 dB -11.50 dB 3:58 ?-Think And You'll Miss It

Dreamshire - CD1 - first four tracks
DR7 -1.72 dB -10.74 dB 2:44 01-Prelude: The Night Is Lit By Diamonds
DR7 -0.97 dB -8.98 dB 3:33 02-Welcome To Dreamshire (Monitor Mix)
DR6 -1.66 dB -10.24 dB 1:36 03-The Pleasure Boaters
DR7 -1.07 dB -9.74 dB 3:45 04-This Everyday World (Vocal version)

Is this a sample that proves nothing, or is the mastering for CD intentionally compressed by design?

I'm intrigued to understand what decisions are made once the music is recorded and produced, and then goes off to be mastered and manufactured.

John.

Just a quick reply as guests are about to arrive for Boxing Day family gathering. The free single tracks are unmastered...they're files straight from my unmastered home DAT tapes without any eq-ing or compression beyond that applied within the mix of each track. As these are free, 'give-away' tracks I didn't want to incur the cost of going to Fairview studios to have the tracks mastered professionally. They're a little rough and ready but that's in the spirit of the thing...think of them as little home-made gifts.
