A very interesting program on television at 9 pm tomorrow night, (BBC 4.) It's a documentary exploring Orson Wells' drawings and paintings and throws new light on his artistic proclivities.

These days, iconic heroes are thin on the ground, but Orson Welles remains a great inspiration and a man I would have loved to have met and sat down to talk 'the life artistic' with.

We're in totally different creative leagues, but, I like to think that we'd have found some things in common.

Oddly enough, I have long seen a parallel between Welles's career and yours, Bill.

Most acclaimed work relatively early on - War of the Worlds, Citizen Kane, Be Bop Deluxe - and then a long and productive career afterwards without quite achieving the previous levels of widespread acclaim. (And please note that I am carefully talking about "acclaim", and deliberately avoiding anything that would lead into arguments about when your or Welles's "best" work - whatever that means - was.)

If I am right, you still have the sherry commercials to look forward to!
